Split ends - the cause of many of our hair frustrations, but an easily rectifiable issue. Split ends are a result of dry and damaged hair, weakened by elements such as heat, chemicals or a lack of moisture. On the market, there are a variety of split-end serums and treatments, but what’s the best way to truly tackle split ends? This handy guide breaks down the dos and don’ts of how to get rid of split ends.
What are split ends
Split ends are when your hair becomes damaged, dry and frayed. Known in the medical world as "trichoptilosis" or "schizotrichia", split ends take the appearance of hair that is split into two parts at the end.
Why do split ends occur
Split ends happen when your hair becomes too dry or damaged, and the hair shaft is weakened. This can be a result of things such as hair colouring (colouring alters the structure of the hair), chemical treatments or heat styling. As split ends can be worsened by a lack of moisture, putting your hair under high temperatures can put your hair under strain, making it much weaker over time.
“Scott is an incredible hairdresser! I have been following him from salon to salon for over 20 years - there is literally no one like him. He is exceptionally talented and really creative. He is very knowledgeable about contemporary hair cutting/styles as well as knowing how to get the best out of your own particular type of hair”.

How to cut split ends
Split ends should always be cut straight rather than on the angle. This is because trimming at an angle can cause the hair to become uneven, risking split ends continuing to occur. An experienced hairdresser will help remove split ends by creating a straight cut across the hair shaft. It’s important to regularly get your hair cut to help with split ends. We recommend having your hair cut every two months to avoid split ends. Once your hairdresser has cut off the split ends, we recommend using a serum, blowdrying and then using a serum again to smooth the tips of the hair.
Serums and treatments for split ends
Whilst it’s easy to get sold the dream when it comes to split-end fixing serums and treatments, it’s important to note that these treatments won’t solve the problem. Only cutting the hair will remove split ends. But serums and treatments can certainly help in between haircut appointments.

Do split ends stop hair growth
Split ends don’t stop hair growth, but they will stop you from achieving a longer hairstyle due to breakage occurring. If you’re looking to achieve longer locks, then we recommend booking a hairdresser appointment every two months.
